My involvement with CPS during the bands career ranged from providing artwork for two of their releases, backing vocals on their track Rock Climber from the cassette release Demonstration, Filling in with sampled vocals for an improvised set at Noise Merchants at the Rechabites Hall, to providing a remix of their track Consumo for their Rip,Mix+Burn release. It was also my connection with CPS that got me involved with the band SwapMeat.
Following the bands retirement I have collaborated with members of CPS on a number of different projects. http://karlockelford.bandcamp.com/track/flatline-consumer-consumo-remix |
An improvised set with Scott Smith on drums, Lee Roy Ucich on guitar and myself on sampler and effects. The concept for this collaboration was to improvise around various sampled sounds of a BBQ. The name Bovine Torch Unit is a twist on the large BTU (British Thermal Unit) symbol that was emblazoned across the BBQ used to record the samples.
Due to old mini disc technology that required confirmation to save a recording before being powered off, all audio documentation of this performance was lost. All that remains is this flyer, audio samples of cooking meat and gas burners and only a vague memory of the event (thanks to cheap Vino Italia wine). |
I was great to be one of the finalists that made it onto the Deconstruction Manual release by Hidden Shoal records. The competition was part of the music tech unit at Murdoch University.
Karl Ockelford’s ‘Greylands' renders source audio from Antonymes, Boxharp, Gilded and Salli Lunn into an expansive, glowering horizon of drones, strings and distortion. Go and have a listen. |
Smoking Toad was a band formed many moons ago with fellow high school reprobate Rory Ward on drums and myself on guitar. As a two piece instrumental band Smoking Toad fused elements of thrash, punk and death metal. The duo wrote five songs and recorded a rough live to tape demo before disbanding.

LANGUID SIGH' is a composition by Cat Hope commissioned for KUNSTRADIO in Austria. For this composition I was asked by Cat Hope to play the bass guitar using small 9volt motors ( a technique that I had been implementing in Abe Sada live performances). The variable speed motor has a felt attachment and is played mainly across the bridge of the guitar, creating a combination of drone, bridge harmonics and electrical interference from the pick ups. Cat then took the recording and added other elements to compose the track that can be heard at the link below.

OTOMO YOSHIHIDE'S 'OTOMO NOW'
"The concert is part of PICA's current exhibition Alternating Currents and mirrors a concert that took place earlier this year in Fukushima. Double Orchestra is created in the spirit of solidarity for the people of Fukushima and for Japan after the tsunami and nuclear incident that devastated the area in March 2011". Hours in front of a computer slicing sound on Cool Edit Pro. I guess this is where and when I started producing electronic music. Released a couple of the tracks through Earwax magazine and the Squeeze The Flock compilation.

XCJ was a collaborative studio project with Col Smith aka KB Gomst. We both spent hours slicing loops, programming drum machines and making noise. Col and I are both in agreement that Dull Grey Box is one the best outcomes of the project. have a listen here https://soundcloud.com/karlford/dull-grey-box-by-x-crazed-jockeys |
